Besides allowing your child to chew and smile, the baby teeth serve as important placeholders for the adult permanent teeth. If a baby tooth falls too soon, the space collapses and prevents the adult tooth from erupting in the right place. If a baby tooth stays too long and does not fall when it’s supposed to, the adult tooth may not have enough space to come into the jaw, and may also indicate a problem with the incoming adult teeth.
