Spreading smiles

Due to advancing age, crooked teeth, muscular tension or an imbalanced bite, teeth gums can recede to expose roots of the teeth and also show up as an uneven gum line. Sharon* was concerned about her receding1 gums in the lower front teeth.
She was treated by using a connective tissue graft which we took from her own mouth and attached it over the receded gum area. It’s now 4 weeks and the grafted skin appears paler. This will gradually return to a more normal color in 3 months. Sharon is very pleased with the result!

Leaf out of George Washington’s book

George Washington, the first president of the United States suffered from severe dental problems. He lost his first tooth at the age of 24 and made innumerable visits to several famous dentists throughout his life.
Each time he lost a tooth he preserved it carefully in the hope that it could be used in his dentures. By the year 1789 at the time of the Presidential election he was down to just one tooth.
It was rumoured that his false teeth were made of wood because they wereso discoloured. In reality, his favourite and last dentist, John Greenwood, fashioned them out of ivory placed on a gold sheet and wired them them with steel springs.
Needless to say, they were most uncomfortable, causing a dramatic change in Washington’s appearance with a swollen looking lower lip and a flattened upper lip. George was very conscious of this and he was reluctant to speak out in meetings and to the public.
Why are we sharing this with you, dear reader? Because history repeats itself, even today.
Neglecting your teeth could cost you, well, your teeth!

Your evening tipple can cause more than a ripple

Alcohol affects almost all parts of the body and the oral cavity is no exception. Oral cancer is the most serious problem for people who drink and use tobacco heavily, as they are more susceptible to cancer causing agents. Both tooth enamel and gums can be affected. Enamel, the outer covering of your tooth gets eroded and this causes sensitivity and sometimes pain. Vomiting, which is often experienced by heavy drinkers, also damages the teeth considerably due to increase in the acidity levels of the mouth.
Periodontal or gum disease is another big problem. Ulcers, sores and areas of minor oral surgery procedures do not heal fast because the natural repair and clot forming mechanism is impaired.
If you are a frequent or heavy drinker, it is wise to let your dentist know before starting any treatment.
A conscious effort towards responsible drinking would also ensure a lifetime of good dental and overall health!

Spreading smiles

Sarah* was always very embarrassed to smile from a very young age, as she had stains on her teeth ever since she can remember. When she smiled, she would always cover her teeth. Stains can be caused by a variety of reasons, but the most common are developmental defects of the teeth, medications taken by a mother during pregnancy, excessive fluoride in the water, smoking and the foods we expose our teeth to. Sarah was much happier when we completed her smile makeover, allowing her to flash her smile with grace and confidence.

Why you must floss

A lot of our patients have been asking us about the recent article by the Associated Press that essentially states that flossing does not help your oral health. Plaque and food accumulated on teeth have been shown to cause cavities without a shadow of doubt. Flossing helps get rid of these deposits and will thereby reduce cavities. This has been difficult to prove with high quality studies due to the fact that many variables will have to be controlled with regard to diet, flossing technique, flossing frequency and brushing technique. However, we at Acharya Dental still continue to strongly recommend flossing for your gum and teeth health, because we see the benefits for ourselves and our patients everyday.

Spreading Smiles

Justin* walked into Acharya Dental with a question. Why, he asked, does my smile does not look right? He had been to a dentist recently who gave him a composite bonded filling, but he was still not happy. After doing a Smile Analysis we found that Justin had ended up with a smile curve that was in reverse, i.e the 2 central incisors were shorter than the lateral incisors. The colour of his bonded teeth were also mismatched . We went to work and gave Justin a very pleasing smile with his teeth in a golden proportion where the central incisors were longer and in line with his canines. Ceramic veneers were placed to give him self confidence. Now, Justin has a smile for everyone!
