Are you brushing the right way?

Here are four simple steps that can help you make the most with your toothbrush.

1).Start brushing your molars and move towards the front of your mouth.

2). Brush from your gums towards the chewing surface and use small strokes to get your teeth cleaned.

3). Make sure you brush every surface of every tooth.

4). Don’t forget to brush your tongue.

Know your toothpaste?

Toothpastes contain abrasives and detergents that reduce plaque and surface stains. Some toothpastes have ingredients to help strengthen enamel and reduce gingivitis, tartar, sensitivity and bad breath. Natural toothpastes have fewer chemicals and do not contain added chemicals or flavors. Teeth sensitivity can be controlled by using a paste that contains desensitizing agents which help stop sensations (like extreme heat or cold) from reaching the tooth’s nerves.

Help, Doctor, my tooth is moving. Do they shift as we get older?

Teeth move throughout life. Even after the adult teeth have come in, they continue to move forward. If there is space between certain teeth or you have lost a tooth, the adjacent teeth may shift towards the empty space. If a lower tooth is lost, the opposite tooth in the upper jaw can move downwards into the gap. These movements can change the way your teeth meet and can cause undue stress and pressure. Sometimes you can get jaw pain as a result.

How does one treat this?
This can be fixed by restoring the contact relationship between teeth with a fixed or removable appliance. An artificial tooth will sometimes be needed to close a gap left by a moving tooth.

Reconstruction is done in a way as to evenly distribute the loads on all the teeth so as to match the position of your original teeth.
