Usage of Fluoride

Fluoride is fantastic for preventing dental caries, but overuse is linked to controversy if ingested in very large amounts. Parents should be careful in storing fluorinated dental products away from children as it can be toxic. Using too much can cause fluorisis, where dental enamel developing under the gums is damaged, causing discoloration, pitting and white lines on the teeth. Consult with us at ‪Acharya Dental‬ regarding the right methods to use fluoride for your oral health.

Beware of what you bite!

People who bite their fingernails when stressed, chew on a pencil when nervous or clench their jaw during activities such as playing sports, working out at the gym or sleeping (night grinding) could be placing their teeth at a great risk of being worn down. These unnatural chewing or biting forces can wear down teeth quite fast and puts stress on your teeth which can cause them to misalign or even fracture in some cases. It is better to put an end to this before it becomes a habit.  Make an appointment with us to get the best solutions to protect your teeth.

How is whitening / bleaching done?

Whitening is a commonly done cosmetic procedure, and the degree of whitening you can expect is dependent on the amount of discoloration. Whitening, or bleaching works by removing stains that already exist in your teeth and restores them to their original colour. Whitening does NOT work by removing enamel, which is a commonly held belief. These stains can occur because of various reasons such as drinking tea, coffee, wine, smoking and medications to name a few. There are many ways to brighten a smile, whitening is one, veneering or “capping” is another. Discuss with our dentists about the treatment best suited for you.

What are some of the ways to temporarily relieve toothaches?

What are some of the ways to temporarily relieve toothaches?
There are many potential causes for tooth pain, and if it lasts you should always schedule an appointment with your ‪‎dentist‬. However, for immediate relief now, we have a few home ‪‎remedies‬ to try:
1) Salt water: Salt helps alleviate inflammation in the gums, which can temporarily lessen the pain of toothaches and also may help stop the spread of bacteria in your mouth.
2) Painkillers: Over-the-counter painkillers can be another temporary, effective source of relief for toothaches. Aspirin and ibuprofen help reduce inflammation and pain. Take the tablets with water, do NOT crush the tablet and apply it directly on the painful area as this can cause “aspirin burn”.
3) Clove oil: This one may be new to you, but it is an age-old remedy for tooth pain. Mix 2-3 drops of clove oil with ¼ teaspoon of olive oil and the soak a cotton ball with the oil mixture. Place the cotton ball near the offending tooth and bite down to keep it in place. Clove oil has anti-bacterial properties and, amazingly, also acts as a mild local anaesthetic.

Dental treatment for people with heart problems

People with heart problems should provide a detailed medical history to their dentists. The decision to treat and prescribe medicine is based upon this history. Heart ailments such as myocardial infarction, irregular heartbeats or arrythimias need to be assessed, as also patients who have undergone bypass surgery. During this period the heart is unstable. Stress from some dental procedures can increase the body’s adrenaline as much as twenty times. Therefore, we avoid epinephrine (the synthetic form of adrenaline) in the local anaesthesia used. Following major heart surgery it is advisable to wait at least 6 months to perform dental treatment. In case of an emergency such as a toothache, abscess or other severe dental infection, it is important to study all the parameters influencing the health of the cardiac patient and work along with the Cardiologist. The toothache may take precedence over the post-surgical heart condition.
